New bid for TikTok from Perplexity AI could give US government 50% stake
Date: January 26, 2025
Source: The Associated Press
Perplexity AI has presented a new proposal to TikTok’s parent company that would allow the U.S. government to own up to 50% of a new entity merging Perplexity with TikTok’s U.S. business. The proposal, submitted last week, is a revision of a prior plan presented on Jan. 18. It seeks to create a new structure with investments from other investors and would allow the U.S. government to own half of the new entity after an initial public offering of at least $300 billion. The government's shares would not have voting power, and it would not get a seat on the new company’s board. ByteDance would contribute TikTok’s U.S. business without the proprietary algorithm, and the plan mirrors a strategy discussed by Steven Mnuchin to dilute Chinese ownership and satisfy the law.
