British Romanian Chamber of Commerce Hosted Key Event on Romania’s Transport and Infrastructure Developments

by Elena Paraschiv-Pop

The British Romanian Chamber of Commerce (BRCC) successfully organized the event „Connecting Romania: Key Transport Developments and Strategic Objectives” at Masia Office. This highly anticipated gathering brought together key stakeholders from the transport, legal, and distribution sectors to discuss the future of Romania’s transport and infrastructure development.

The event featured an open dialogue with industry leaders who shared their expertise on critical topics, including national transport infrastructure improvements, modernization of public transport, and emerging trends for creating more efficient transport systems. Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions about Romania’s transport priorities for the coming year and other ongoing strategic initiatives.

Key points of focus included:

  • Improving national transport infrastructure
  • Modernizing public transport
  • Promoting sustainable transport for now and beyond
  • Solutions for efficient transport solutions & main trends

The event provided a platform for collaboration and the exchange of knowledge between different sectors, ensuring that Romania’s transport infrastructure continues to evolve in line with global standards and the growing demands of commerce.

When we think of transportation in Romania, it’s easy to switch to the challenges before understanding the progress being made in the urban, rural and national initiatives taking place in roadways, railways, sea ports along with the infrastructure to make things happen. A really open and stimulating panel session and talks at this critical time in Romania’s continued growth needs. many thanks to all those attending and for the expert insights delivered” said Colin Lovering – BRCC Chairman

The event moderator – Mr. Alexandru Debrezeni – Member of ANEVAR – stated that “Romania is currently undergoing profound transformations in its transport infrastructure, fueled by ambitious projects and strategic objectives that are closely aligned with European standards. These advancements are designed to enhance regional connectivity, promote sustainable mobility, and drive economic growth. The main transport developments focus on the expansion of road infrastructure, the modernization of railways, improvements to public transport, and the development of airport facilities. Looking ahead, Romania’s strategic objectives should emphasize sustainable mobility, enhanced connectivity, transport digitalization, and new investments. I firmly believe that through these key projects and strategic goals, Romania is striving to build a modern, sustainable, and integrated transport system that will foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for all its citizens.

Great to be at the British Chamber event to talk about the importance of and priorities for transport and infrastructure in Romania. Egis has been at the heart of designing and supervising Romanian public infrastructure development for almost 30 years. As an engineer, our main challenges today are dealing with the huge volumes of construction projects – there are simply not enough engineers in Romania. The contractual conditions also remain very rigid and often punitive which makes it difficult to attract and retain engineers in Romania. With plans for approximately 400km of highways per year and a strong pipeline of rail and other transport projects, Romania may now start to catch up with the rest of Europe. To ensure this it’s vital to: improve the attractiveness of this market; to develop the very talented pool of Engineers that Romania already has; and finally to invest more in the design phases that will de-risk and improve the success of projects in the implementation phases”, added James Hanson – Managing Director Egis Romania

Romania has recently surpassed Portugal in terms of GDP per capita at purchasing power parity, signaling a major step forward in its economic development and living standards. This achievement highlights the steady growth of the Romanian economy, positioning the country competitively within the European Union, where it is now closely competing with Spain to further improve its economic standing. Despite this economic progress, Romania faces significant challenges in its transport infrastructure, which remains a critical factor for ensuring connectivity, development, and long-term growth. Insufficient investment in transport networks threatens Romania’s ability to fully leverage its economic potential and attract foreign investment. Authorities are urged to prioritize the modernization and expansion of infrastructure to maintain competitiveness within the EU and support sustainable growth.” affirmed Codrin Scutaru – CEO at Public Affairs Solutions

The British Romanian Chamber of Commerce (BRCC) is pleased to announce its intention to organize another major initiative focused on transport in the upcoming year. Building on the success of this year’s event, BRCC aims to bring together key stakeholders at a larger scale to explore new opportunities, address challenges, and advance Romania’s transport infrastructure development. This initiative will continue to foster collaboration and drive progress towards a more connected and sustainable future for the region.
